Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust

Imperial College Healthcare is the sixth largest Trust in the NHS and London’s largest teaching hospital. It provides care for 2.4 million people in north west London, and for patients beyond London in need of specialist treatment.

The Trust’s delivery of clinical excellence and education is underpinned by its focus on research and innovation. In partnership with Imperial College London Faculty of Medicine it is part of the UK’s first new Academic Health Science Centre (AHSC). The Trust is also part of National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) and the NIHR Health Informatics Collaborative, all of which help translate research into improved outcomes for patients. The Trust currently has over 700 active research projects in progress.

The Trust submitted its strategic outline case for the redevelopment of St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington in September, making the case for state-of-the-art clinical facilities for adults and children with a total of 840 beds plus dedicated research, education and innovation spaces. St Mary’s will be one of the most advanced, research-led, major trauma and acute hospitals in the world.

The redevelopment will also catalyse the creation of a clinical life sciences cluster, in partnership with industry and research. With better use of the estate generating surplus land, this would be used to provide flexible commercial and lab space for life sciences businesses to start, develop and grow. It would also link with a new centre for clinical infection bringing together specialist expertise in infectious disease, research and education (including the Alexander Fleming Laboratory Museum).

Plans are also underway for the refurbishment and redevelopment at the Trust’s Charing Cross and Hammersmith hospitals.
